The 120 teachers in Ogun State reportedly used to access a N200m loan fraudulently from a first generation bank have threatened to sue the finance house for damaging their reputation.
The state Nigeria Union of Teachers Chairman, Mr. Dare Ilekoya, made this known while briefing journalists in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
The teachers, Ilekoya said, were innocent of the crime allegedly committed in 2011.
According to him, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has already cleared them of any complicity in the fraud.
The teachers, who were mainly from public secondary schools in the Abeokuta South Local Government Area, were at the commission’s Lagos office two weeks ago for questioning over the fraud.
Ilekoya noted that none of the teachers took any loan from the bank.
He said, “Not a single secondary school teacher was found to have applied, filled, signed any form or taken any amount of money from the bank or any of their accomplices. They all returned as heroes.
“The Nigeria Union of Teachers demands unreserved apologies to these teachers, individually and collectively. For this, the union will still be contacting the bank via official letters and physical contacts. The apology must be tendered in writing because of unforeseen future occurrences; otherwise, the union and the affected teachers will be left with no option but to seek legal redress on the matter.”
Ilekoya, nonetheless, urged the anti-graft agency to investigate the bank officials in order to identify the perpetrators and their accomplices.
Describing the teachers as heroes and the fraud as a national disgrace, the NUT boss insisted that there was the need for thorough investigation of the issue.
He said, “This is a national disgrace, an assault on our collective psyche, which must not be swept under the carpet. All the culprits and actors found culpable in this shameful act must be brought to book at all costs.”
